27-28 September 2019

at Andhra Pradesh Human Resource Development Institute (APHRDI) BAPATLA Guntur District AP

Introduction

Mahatma Gandhi’s Nai-Talim (New Education) is a well formulated approach to education in 1937. It is based on the experiments he did right from 1904 when he was in South Africa to his stay in Sabarmati (Gujarat) and Sevagram (Maharashtra) and also based on the philosophy of education. Nai Talim’s approach is for the total personality development of body, mind and spirit. This is based on four basic principles i.e. education or learning in mother tongue along with handicraft work; work should be linked with most useful vocational needs of the locality; learning should be linked with vocational work, and work should be socially useful and productive needed for living. The basic approach of Nai-Talim is work centric education with locally accessible technology. Nai Talim is an approach working on the principle which states that knowledge and work are one and same. This is working with the principle to promote the educational curriculum with the pedagogical principle of learning through the work of the handcraft. The Nai-Talim can be translated with the phrase 'Basic Education for all'. The concept of Nai-Talim has several layers of meaning. It developed out of Gandhi's experience with the English educational system and with colonialism in general. In that system, he saw that Indian children would be alienated and 'career-based thinking' would become dominant .
